Gearing up for the Marathon

Urban Island Director and veteran Marathon runner John Morsley is gearing up for this years marathon. Find out more about the buildup, training routes and updates on John's progress here -

March 1st 2010

We’re now half-way through the Training Programme and it’s going really well - I've just completed week 8 out of a planned 16 and we're still on target. I wasn’t feeling too well during week 6 – a tummy ache was giving me a bout of ‘Runners Trots’ but that’s all behind me now and my times have been picking up over the last couple of weeks. I had an excellent 13-miler this morning (28/02/10) despite some atrocious weather conditions. I made-up a circular route that linked the East London Canals with the Thames! From Three Mills I headed west and got as far as I could along the Regent’s Canal. At Islington Tunnel I aimed south along the Goswell Road then made my way via Mansion House to London Bridge. Here I picked up the Thames Path and kept going east until I joined the Limehouse Cut where I headed for home.

Next Sunday, my colleague Denice and I shall be taking part in the Newham 10k. This is a race in the Olympic Park and we’ll also be taking in the delights of Stratford Park, West Ham Park, The Greenway and Stratford Town Centre. If you’re in the area then come and give us a cheer! If you’d like to read some more about this forthcoming event then please go to http://www.newhamlondonrun.org - we’ll let you know how we get on!

A big ‘THANK YOU’ to the Staff and Customers of The Builder’s Arms, High Street Stratford for supporting ‘DebRA’ in the 2010 London Marathon.

Their generous donations to the charity when I ran in 2008 made a big difference (I can’t believe that two years have passed since I last ran the London – how time flies)! Once again, the Landlord, Kev has very kindly pinned my Sponsor Form up behind the bar and is getting some much appreciated local support for ‘DebRA’. This will give me a good excuse to pop along regularly to see how the fundraising’s going (and to have a drink or two of course)! If you think your local ‘Rub-a-Dub’ might be interested in making a contribution then please let me know and I’ll get a Sponsor Form to you, no problem.

Many, many thanks to my most recent sponsors since my last update. My website has been up and running for just over a month now and through your generous contributions we've already raised nearly 30% of our target which is great news. Special thanks to Paul, Chris, Geoff, Ken, Alison, Jon, Sharyn, Neil, Stuart and Brian. Your donations are greatly appreciated by 'DebRA' and are a big encouragement to me.

Please stay tuned-in to 'John's Blog'. Bye-for-now!
